The Ontario Works Program provides income and employment
assistance for people who are in temporary financial need. In
addition to financial help, clients may be eligible for drug and
dental coverage, eyeglasses, hearing aids, and community and
employment start-up benefits.

How We Can Help
West End Legal Services work in the area of Ontario Works law.
We can assist clients with a variety of matters, including:

Appeals where a person has been denied benefits and there
may be merit to appealing the denial of benefits.

Appeals where a person is on benefits but benefits are
suspended.

Appeals where a large overpayment has been assessed and
there may be merit to appealing the overpayment question.

Eligibility
To be eligible for Ontario Works, you must be
a resident of Ontario
in immediate financial need*
willing to participate in employment assistance activities.

*Financial need is based on
family size
income
assets
shelter costs.

Applying for Assistance
You can begin the application process for Ontario Works over the phone or in person at one of the four Ottawa Ontario Works
offices. When your first meeting is arranged you will be told
which documents you must bring with you. Those documents
may include:

Social Insurance Number
Health card number
Proof of identity and date of birth
Employment history/information
Income and asset statements
Shelter cost
Status in Canada.

To complete the application process you will be required to
complete and sign the application for assistance as well as
a
participation agreement. The participating agreement outlines the
specific employment activities that will likely lead to a permanent
job.

Finding a Job
Ontario Works provides practical help in finding a job. They do
this in a number of ways.

Workshops on looking for work, résumé writing, and
preparing for an interview.
Referrals to job counseling or training.
Access to telephones, faxes, computers and job banks.
Information on who’s hiring.
Helping clients complete high school, improve language
skills, and upgrade reading, writing or math.
Job-specific training and special skills programs.
Community and employment placements to gain working
experience.
Literacy screening and training.
