West End Legal Services is a legal clinic serving our community. For this reason it is important
that members of our community become involved with the clinic. To show your support for the
clinic, we encourage you to take out a WELS
membership. You may also want to consider
serving on the
Board of Directors or on one of the Board's committees.

Become a Member of WELS
If you support the aims and objectives of WELS consider becoming a member. As a member
you will be entitled to vote at the Annual General Meeting. You will also be eligible to run for
the
Board of Directors. Twice a year you will receive our newsletter, The Advocate.

Download the
application. Membership is free.

Join the Board of Directors
WELS is a community-based corporation governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The 11-member Board of
Directors is made up of a cross-section of individuals from our community.

Join a Committee
If you do not have the time to serve on the Board, you can still play an important role in the process by volunteering for
one of our committees.

Letter Writing Campaigns
The clinic system is chronically underfunded. The result is that most legal clinics are not able to help all those who
qualify for legal help since they are not able to hire sufficient staff. If you or someone you know has was not able to get
legal help you should write to your MPP about your experience.

Our 2010
Recipient of the
Joe Assabgui
Community Champion
Award
Centre 454
West End Legal Services recognizes the important work of Centre 454 and the dedication of this committed group of
people who have worked tirelessly for their community.

Centre 454 is one of four Community Ministries of the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa and one of eight City-funded Day
Programs in Ottawa. They provide hospitality, counselling, crisis intervention, practical supports and social recreational
activities to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

They provide support in a non-judgmental, client-centred manner, with an emphasis on dignity, respect and self-
determination of the individual. They offer free services and assist people in ways that are part of normal daily living that
a person would not otherwise be able to access.

In June 2010, in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association, Centre 454 announced that the ODSP
Application Support Worker Program would be expanded through a contribution under the City of Ottawa’s Poverty
Reduction Strategy.

The west worker for ODSP assistance is located at Ontario Works West, 100 Constellation Cr,  Every Tuesdays 1:00-3:
30 pm.  She is also located in other agencies in the community!

The Joe Assabgui Community Champion Award
Joe Assabgui was a retired accountant who volunteered his services for many years in the City of Ottawa. Joe was a
member of Centraide/United Way and a nominee for Community Builder in 2000 & 2001. For more than 10 years Joe
helped pro-bono low-income individuals with their income tax returns. He was the treasurer of Debra-Dynes Family
House as well as treasurer of West End Legal Services for 6 six years.

A real void was left in our community when he passed away suddenly in December 2007. He is still missed to this day
but his presence is felt with this award.
